On April 15, 2010, the River Oaks Country Club will host the Children’s Defense Fund’s 2010 Beat the Odds® Houston awards dinner.

We will honor Philamena and Arthur Baird as Champions of Children and award college scholarships to six extraordinary high school seniors.

Marian Wright Edelman, president of Children’s Defense Fund and recipient of the United States Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian honor, will be our keynote speaker. This event is being chaired by Sharon M. Owens and Ed Smith.

The event includes a cocktail reception at 6:30 pm followed by dinner and the awards program at 7:15 pm.

In April 2009, CDF-Texas hosted its 10th Annual Beat the Odds awards dinner in Houston. The event honored Marilyn and George DeMontrond as "Champions of Children" and awarded college scholarships to six extraordinary high school seniors for overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles to achieve academic success and leadership in their communities.

Special thanks to all of our generous program sponsors including corporate sponsors Continental Airlines and Macy's for donating round-trip airfare and professional attire for each scholarship recipient.

In addition to scholarships, proceeds from the event sustain the critical work of CDF-Texas to ensure every child a healthy start in life and to support continued youth development initiatives.
