"No one else recognized how hard I had to work to accomplish even small successes. Having someone believe in me and care about me made all the difference."

2008 Beat the Odds Awards Dinner

On March 13, CDF Texas celebrated extraordinary young people from Houston and the Liberty/Dayton County area during the 2008 Beat the Odds awards dinner.

What is Beat the Odds?

Initiated in 1990, the CDF Beat the Odds program is part of a national initiative to highlight the positive potential of young people.

Honoring Student Achievement

Each spring, CDF selects five high school seniors who have overcome serious obtacles, demonstrating significant courage and academic achievement, and giving back to their communities.

Providing Opportunities

In addition to a college scholarship, winners receive national recognition and media attention, and attend summertime Young Adult Leadership Training at the CDF Haley Farm.

Raising Awareness

Since 1999, CDF Texas has combined this annual awards ceremony with a benefit luncheon to raise awareness of the condition of children to the greater Houston community.

Celebrating Champions

As part of the event, CDF honors individuals committed to improving the lives of children, with a Champion of Children award.

Previous honorees include Houston Mayor Bill White, former Harris County Judge Robert Eckels, Bob and Elyse Lanier, and Lan and Adele Bentsen.

More than 350 Beat the Odds award recipients walk the halls of leadership and service in their universities and communities. They inspire others who face similar odds. Their experiences inform efforts to improve life for all children.
