10th Annual Awards Dinner
Honoring Marilyn and George DeMontrond
and six extraordinary youth

On Wednesday, April 22, 2009 CDF-Texas hosted its 10th Annual Beat the Odds awards dinner in Houston to recognize six extraordinary high school seniors who have overcome tremendous adversity to succeed in school and in life.

Each student received a college scholarship funded by generous event sponsors, as well as roundtrip airfare from Continental, clothing from Macy's, a Fossil watch and laptop computer. In addition to providing scholarships, proceeds from the event support the critical work of CDF-Texas to ensure every child a healthy start in life.

About Beat the Odds

CDF's annual Beat the Odds program honors outstanding high school seniors who have overcome tremendous adversity to demonstrate academic success and give back to their communities.

Since 1999, CDF-Texas has awarded more than fifty college scholarships to youths in the Houston area. Many recipients have gone on to pursue advanced degrees and leadership positions in their communities.

On May 19, 2009 CDF's Beat the Odds scholarship program will expand to the Dallas area.

Developing Future Leaders

In addition to college scholarships and public recognition, CDF invites winners to attend Young Advocate Leadership Training at CDF's Haley Farm outside Knoxville, TN.

Raising Awareness

CDF-Texas combines the annual awards ceremony with a benefit to raise awareness about the condition of Texas children and the need for continued advocacy.

Celebrating Champions

As part of the celebration, CDF has honored local champions committed to improving the lives of Texas children.

"My life may have taken a different route if it were not for CDF. A lot of kids like me who are wading in the deep waters of the foster care system are just trying to get out. CDF helped me realize there was more than just getting out. CDF helped me see myself going to college. I hope that one day I get the chance to start a spark in a child that will lead them on the "road less traveled."
