Alternative Caregivers Provide Safety Net for 25,000 Houston Children
Houston, TX – On Tuesday, September 7th, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Texas will partner with Advocate Legal Senior Center to co-sponsor a Conference for Grandparents and Kinfolk Rearing Children of Absentee Parents at the 3rd Ward Multi-Service Center. The conference will feature CDF experts providing data and research about the urgent and disturbing national phenomenon known as the Cradle to Prison Pipeline® crisis, and the very real risks facing children. Information will also be provided about affordable children’s health coverage options, tax benefits for low to moderate income families with children, juvenile justice, and a unique initiative called the CDF Freedom Schools® program that is successfully bridging the achievement gap for school-aged children and putting them on a path to success.
More than 240,000 children in Texas are being raised by grandparents or other relatives without either parent present; 25,000 of those children live in Houston. Alternative caregivers provide a vital safety net for children inside and outside of the foster care system. Children whose parents struggle with substance abuse, mental illness, incarceration, economic hardship, divorce, domestic violence and other challenges have a greater likelihood of ending up in prison. CDF’s Campaign works to reduce those odds by encouraging prevention and early intervention before children get sick or into trouble.
