Texas Is Home to Over 1 Million Uninsured Children; Effort Seeks to Close the Gap
HOUSTON – In the spirit of caring for those you love, Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Texas and Fiesta Mart Inc. will host several children’s health insurance sign up events, themed “For Valentine’s Day, Give Your Kids the Gift of Health Care” on Saturday, February 16, 2013 in eight Fiesta stores across the Houston area. For more than ten years, Fiesta and CDF-Texas have partnered to help local families with children and teens who qualify apply for low-cost or free health care coverage through the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Children’s Medicaid.
“With one in four children in Harris County lacking health care coverage, meaning they can't see a doctor when they need to, that puts a big burden - an emotional toll - on our families, and a social and financial strain on our public health infrastructure that touches all of us in every sector of the community,” said Juanita Elizondo, director, Corporate Relations of Fiesta Mart Inc. “We care about our Houston community and the future of this great city, and our children’s health and wellbeing is a huge part of that,” Elizondo added.
Aimed at reaching eligible, yet uninsured children in the greater Houston area, on-site application assistance will be provided to families wishing to apply for, or renew Texas CHIP or Children’s Medicaid. Both programs cover regular checkups, immunizations, doctor and dentist visits, hospital care, mental health services, prescriptions and more. Children in a family of four earning up to $47,100 per year may qualify. In order to apply, parents should bring proof of income and a copy of their child’s birth certificate, Social Security number, and Permanent Resident Card if applicable. For information about CHIP and Children’s Medicaid, visit CHIPmedicaid.org or call 1-877-KIDS-NOW.
“What many people don't recognize is that even if they work, their kids may be eligible for CHIP or Medicaid. In fact, half of uninsured children today are eligible but not enrolled, and that’s why we're especially grateful to community-minded businesses like Fiesta for their leadership and commitment to the health of Houston families in working with us to connect kids to coverage,” said Anat Kelman Shaw Texas Director of Communications for the Children’s Defense Fund.
Many children go uninsured even though they are eligible for health benefits through Medicaid and CHIP. Having health coverage can make a major difference in a child’s life. Children with health insurance lead healthier lives, do better in school, and their families have greater peace of mind. These events are part of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Connecting Kids to Coverage campaign, a nationwide effort to enroll eligible children and teens in CHIP and Medicaid.
