Since 1999, CDF-Texas has worked closely with local, state and national child advocates and partners to level the playing field for children through a variety of signature programs and initiatives. Our current programs build upon CDF's more than 40-year history of inspiring and empowering individuals, young and old, to create the kind of transformative change our children and underserved communities urgently need. CDF Freedom Schools® Program
The CDF Freedom Schools program provides summer and after-school enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning. Children are taught using a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high-quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health.

Beat the Odds® Program
The CDF Beat the Odds program honors outstanding high schools students who have overcome tremendous adversity, have demonstrated academic excellence and have given back to their communities. Each year, through a meticulous review process, CDF-Texas identifies and rewards five outstanding young people in the Houston area who have experienced significant hardship in their lives by providing each with a college scholarship, leadership training, and other gifts to support their continued development and success.
Since 1999, CDF-Texas has awarded more than 122 Beat the Odds scholarships to outstanding youths from Houston, Liberty County and Dallas, though the program currently covers only the Houston area.

Health Outreach & Enrollment
Through our school-based Child Health Outreach and Enrollment Project, we partner with the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) and local school districts in Texas to make sure that all children have access to free and affordable healthcare. Since 2002, we have partnered with districts from Houston to the Rio Grande Valley to develop innovative and nationally recognized school-based models that assist schools in identifying uninsured children and linking them with health coverage.

Youth Development & Leadership
Policy in action is a distinguishing CDF characteristic. Through statewide initiatives and community-based programs, we plant the seeds to develop the next generation of servant-leaders who will continue to reweave the fabric of community for children and youth. Our vision is to create a successor generation of servant-leaders who will drive community and state transformations and inspire and make long-term improvements for children.

Faith Based Action
Religious people and organizations—with millions of members, deep roots in communities across the country, a history of caring for children, and moral authority—are indispensable to building a successful Leave No Child Behind® movement.
With our collective voice, followed by concrete action, we do not just make small changes. We change the community. We change the nation. We change the lives and improve the odds for all children.
